Persatuan Alumni AOTS Malaysia (PAAM), with the close cooperation and assistance of The Association for Overseas Technical Scholarship (AOTS) Japan, successfully organised a 5-day Training Programme on ”Vital Business Tools for Manufacturing Industries” on 20-24 January 2003, in Kuala Lumpur.

In addition to thirteen fourteen Malaysian participants, seventeen participants from Asean countries attended : Indonesia ( 6 ), Singapore (4), Vietnam (4), and the Philippines (3). The President of PAAM provided the welcome address, and Mr Takeshi Ichikawa, General Manager of AOTS Malaysia gave the opening remarks. Mr Kazutoshi Aikawa, Counselor and Head of Economic Section, Embassy of Japan in Malaysia, gave an introductory address.

The first two days of the programme was led by a very well-known Japanese expert, Dr Seiichi Fujita. He transferred his wide and deep knowledge of the Japanese Management technique known as Kaizen (continuous improvement). The next two days covered the important topic of Total Quality Control, led by a Malaysian consultant. The final day addressed the current interest manufacturing topic of ”Total Cycle Time” , and was ably conducted by a member of the Persatuan, Mr Alan Lai. All the participants reported that they enjoyed the training program, and looked forward to similar courses in future.

The above training programme is a good example of the close cooperation and ties between Malaysia and Japan in working towards promoting international economic cooperation and enhancing mutual economic development, in addition to maintaining friendly relations between the citizens. The participation of citizens from four ASEAN countries also undoubtedly enhanced ASEAN cooperation and friendly ties. The fact that two non-profit organisations (PAAM and AOTS) from a developing and developed nation can work together to organise the above training programme, is a good example of ”self-help” between organizations and nations.
